This series represents ideas of people that influence me in some way. Selected quotes punched out on plastic labels are paired with somber black and white ink portraits of their authors. The quotes are sometimes modified slightly to make them imperative, as though the portraits were giving me advice. I make these portraits as a form of motivation in my studio, a sort of self-selected group of coaches, cheerleaders, and an occasional scolder. Seen separately, each painting is an individual portrait of its subject. Together, they are a self-portrait of my conscience, revealing my weaknesses, insecurities, and process.
